VISUAL ARTS & CRAFTS DEVELOPMENT POLICY
1. PURPOSE
This policy sets out the principles, standards, and procedures guiding all visual arts and crafts initiatives supported by Barberton Innovative Artist Society (BIAS).
Its purpose is to ensure that all projects:
• Promote appreciation of South African visual arts and crafts
• Reflect authentic cultural, social, and environmental contexts
• Uphold excellence in artistic quality and craftsmanship
• Empower artists and communities
• Encourage sustainable and responsible creative practices

To cultivate a South Africa where local visual arts and crafts are valued, preserved, and celebrated, where artists thrive in excellence, and where creativity drives cultural pride, community development, and sustainable growth.
3. MISSION
BIAS empowers artists and crafters by supporting high-quality creative projects that reflect South Africa’s cultural landscape, uplift communities, and promote sustainable artistic practices through funding, mentorship, education, and professional standards.
4. GUIDING PRINCIPLES
All BIAS-supported projects must be grounded in:
• Artistic excellence and originality
• Cultural authenticity and respect
• Community engagement and inclusion

5. GRANT FUNDING CRITERIA
Projects seeking support must demonstrate:
• Promotion of local visual arts and crafts
• Representation of South African heritage, identity, or contemporary life
• Superior artistic quality and craftsmanship
• Community involvement through exhibitions, workshops, or outreach
• Clear project plans, budgets, and timelines
• Measurable social, cultural, or educational impact
• Consideration of sustainable materials and methods
Preference may be given to projects that:
• Support emerging artists and youth
• Preserve traditional craft skills
• Improve public access to art
• Address social or environmental issues
6. PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION STANDARDS
All funded projects must:
• Maintain professional production and presentation standards
• Deliver activities as approved by BIAS
• Respect cultural heritage and intellectual property
• Document processes and final works
• Submit progress and completion reports
• Acknowledge BIAS support in public materials
Projects should aim to leave lasting community benefits such as skills development, cultural preservation, or increased public engagement with the arts.
7. ARTIST SELECTION STANDARDS
Artists and crafters participating in BIAS initiatives must demonstrate:
• Technical competence and high artistic standards
• Original or culturally authentic creative expression
• Consistency of work or strong emerging potential
• Professional reliability and ethical conduct
• Willingness to engage in community activities and mentorship
